The Battle of Compton's Ferry took place on August 11, 1862, when a column of cavalry under Colonel Odom Guitar surprised a large number of Confederate recruits under Colonel John A. Poindexter. The battle itself - a short encounter with little more than eight rounds fired in the air - had the Confederates flee across the river in a rout, leaving behind much of their supplies and ammunition.
